SCWA Study-Abroad Scholarships & Student Outreach Activities

The Savannah Council on World Affairs Study-Abroad Scholarships are designed to help finance undergraduate students from the Greater Savannah Area who are participating in study-abroad programs.  To apply students must have already been accepted to a university-managed study-abroad program, meet SCWA academic criteria, and have a verifiable financial need.  Academic coordinators at local colleges screen prospective candidates and provide recommendations to the SCWA Board of Directors.

SCWA Student Study Abroad Scholarships enable qualified students to pursue these opportunities for international education by supporting the cost of their travel and living expenses while abroad.  SCWA’s goal is to award as many stipends as our funds allow each year, and your contribution to our Scholarship Fund will assist us in sustaining that high level of support.  The greater your donation; the more scholarships and financial support SCWA can offer to these students.

In addition to providing study-abroad scholarships, SCWA has begun a pilot program of Student Outreach to support local college and high-school level activities that encourage greater understanding of world affairs.  These include, for example, providing financial support for a recent Model Arab League Conference of high-school and college students at Georgia Southern University, funding a local public high-school's Model United Nations team's trip to a regional competition in North Carolina, and sending board members to a few schools to discuss career options for those interested in international affairs.  We are in only our first year of this pilot program of enhanced student outreach, and while we currently feel quite positive about this new range of activities, we will assess its utility and viability at the end of the year and make adjustments if necessary.

Below are photos of college and high-school students voting in one of the Model Arab League committees at the recent MAL Conference at Georgia Southern University,  Savannah State University students with local representatives on their study-abroad program in Ghana, and some of the members of the Herschel V. Jenkins High School MUN team in North Carolina.
